Castello Banfi Poggio alle Mura Riserva 2008 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio alle Mura pushes the Brunello boundaries to an extreme. It will probably not appeal to everyone, but no matter how you cut it, this Riserva does indeed offer a memorable and delectable experience. This was a difficult vintage that shows beautifully in this bottling. A dark, inky appearance gives way to bold aromas of pressed fruit, prune and dark spice. The tannins show a degree of softness and are utterly void of that green, astringent after-bite you sometimes get with Brunello. Tangy black pepper and licorice add liveliness to the long finish. -Monica Larner (February 2014)
