Another name for Bonarda, this ancient varietal is planted extensively throughout Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna.  In Lombardy’s Oltrepo’ Pavese and Emilia’s Colli Piacentini it is known as Bonarda.  In Piedmont it is often blended with Nebbiolo and the real Bonarda. Croatina means Croatian girl, as does the Croatian grape Hrvatica, though DNA shows there is no link.
